Vocational education charity St-Ed’s wins B&CE Mowlem Award 2017

We are delighted to announce that vocational education charity St Edmunds Society (St-Eds) is the winner of the B&CE Mowlem Award 2017.

St-Eds is a registered charity that provides a positive learning environment for young people between the ages of 14 and 24.  Some may have struggled to achieve in mainstream education or simply Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET).

The charity offers a wide variety of accredited vocational training, including bricklaying, plastering and electrics, and each qualification meets the Department for Education’s Gold Standard Benchmark.  St-Eds also offers a six-month study programme for 16-19 year olds in construction, as well as Employability Days with a range of construction companies.

Now in its third year, the B&CE Mowlem Award is granted annually to an organisation that really makes a difference to training and the promotion of health and safety in the construction industry.

Nicola Sinclair, B&CE Charitable Trust Manager, said:

“We are so pleased to grant this year’s Mowlem Award to St-Eds. They do so much to help young people, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, gain the skills they need to enter the construction industry. They also help develop a full understanding of the importance of health and safety which is so vital in the sector.”

Lorraine Bliss, Chief Executive at St-Eds said:

“We are both delighted and very humbled to have been chosen to receive this year’s B&CE Mowlem Award.  Receiving it is testimony to the efforts of our charity and our staff as a whole.  It will help us to improve the employment opportunities of even more young people, in an industry which can provide them with an exciting future.”

More information on St-Eds can be found here.

Notes to editors

B&CE’s Charitable Trust was set up in 1991 to give back to the community. To date, it has given out over £3 million, providing financial help for people in need.

The B&CE Charitable Trust Mowlem Award was launched in 2015, recognising organisations that demonstrate achievements in training and the promotion of health and safety in the construction industry.

Last year’s winner was Women into Construction, an independent not-for-profit organisation that promotes gender equality in construction. They provide bespoke support to women wishing to work in the construction industry, and help contractors recruit highly motivated, trained women, helping to reduce skills gaps and create a more gender-equal work-force.  The first winner in 2015 was Shekinah Mission, and you can read their case study here.

The Mowlem Award furthers the work of the now ceased RI Beck Trust, a charity set up in 1983 by construction company Mowlem. The RI Beck Trust was pleased to extend its scope and join with B&CE’s Charitable Trust in 2015, so that its shared aims and objectives could be continued through the award.
