2022 award winners case study

Constructionarium Ltd

Constructionarium Ltd is a not-for-profit organisation providing a unique, innovative and “hands-on” residential construction experience for students and professionals in the built environment sector.

Their enterprise

Having identified a lack around industry participation in education, their approach to training allows students to gain firsthand experience of construction on a project-by-project basis. They believe students exceed by “putting theory into practice”.

Each project at the facility in Bircham Newton in Norfolk features a scaled-down replica of well-known structures, including The Gherkin, Millau Cable Bridge, Barcelona Tower, and the Canary Wharf Underground. Recently, they’ve increased their focus towards the environment sector, which is projected to grow rapidly in the coming decades.

Our award

We recognised the important role this unique approach to construction education would play in bridging the gap between learning and experience. Such creative approaches towards training not only provide the requisite skills for construction employment, but they also empower individuals to work as a collective, finding solutions to work-related issues that can only be learned through the work itself.
In particular, Constructionarium Ltd have used the grant to fund a bespoke 2-day training course for academics, with no or minimal on-site experience, allowing them to gain knowledge and understanding around the practical applications of construction.

We are thrilled that our application impressed the judges as we really believe this project offers the construction industry something unique. We know that many who teach others about construction have never experienced working on a site. This event will help them understand the challenges workers face on a daily basis.
